Instead, the program focused on improving patient safety by developing systems that would automatically report signs of illness to the human operators that are monitoring the patient. If the operator noticed anything out of the ordinary about the way the patient was moving or acting, a signal would be sent to a human nurse or other operators on duty that would then act upon the information and take action.

With the implementation of this first initiative, improvements in healthcare artificial intelligence were made. Today, most large hospitals have entire teams of computer specialists assigned to the task of keeping track of data and diagnosing problems as soon as they arise. Because of the pace at which technology is advancing, even smaller hospitals are taking advantage of the opportunities that exist. This is only the beginning, as the healthcare industry will continue to explore all of its possible applications.

Another application of healthcare artificial intelligence comes in the form of pharmacy intervention. In the past, pharmacies have simply relied upon recorded data from a patient’s history to determine what medicines to give. However, with the incredible power of computers, pharmacy experts are now able to conduct a full analysis of a patient’s history, along with the activities of other family members, to determine which prescriptions to make and how often. This allows pharmacies to make better decisions regarding the medications that they prescribe, while allowing patients more control over their healthcare. In addition, this technology helps reduce the costs of medicine overall by reducing the number of errors that are made to administer the drugs.
